In the service of the American CIC

Available in: English | Česky

In February 1948, the Communist regime had closed its borders with the “enemy foreign countries.” Although, based on the decision of the Ministry of Interior, all passports were deemed void, the regime did not manage to prevent a mass departure of refugees into exile. Indispensable assistance to the people crossing the green border was provided by guides and sometimes by couriers. František Zahrádka was one of them. At first, he only accompanied his friends, Boy Scouts,to the state border. In the summer of 1949, he decided to change his route for safety reasons. For the first time, he set out with a group of seven refugees past the border mountain Poledník (milestone number 16) to Bavaria. Due to bad weather and a shooting that started a couple of hundred meters behind his group, he was forced to cross the state border. In Straubing, in Bavaria, he established liaisons with the American CIC. He returned repeatedly to Czechoslovakia, and as a courier he fulfilled various tasks. He also guided a former soldier Silvester Müller to Germany, whom he later also accompanied on his last journey back to Czechoslovakia (12th August 1949).

Hraniční patník č. 16 (Poledník - Šumava)

Available in: English | Česky

Dnes asi nejslavnější hraniční patník (č. 16) se nachází nedaleko šumavské hory Poledník (1315 metrů). Kolem tohoto patníku – tehdy to ovšem ještě nevěděl – převedl František Zahrádka v létě 1949 celkem osm uprchlíků do Bavorska. V roce 2012 si dvaaosmdesátiletý převáděč a kurýr tuto cestu zopakoval a po osmihodinovém pochodu v mrazu a sněhu si již poněkolikáté mohl poplácat „svůj“ patník.
